How pharmaceutical drugs are made?

The history of pharmaceutical drugs is as old as that of disease. And the disease itself emerged with the initiation of life. It means that pharmaceutical drugs had been existing since the start of life. Any chemical that may be used for the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis or prevention of a disease is termed as a pharmaceutical or a drug or a pharmaceutical drug. A huge population of the world consumes a bulk amount of pharmaceutical drugs every day. Almost each and every individual has tasted one or the other kind of drug in his life. It means that there is a deep relationship between a human being and a drug. As a usual phenomenon, every mind will have a question about how these pharmaceutical drugs are made. To answer such questions you have to spend few more minutes in reading this article.
The process of making a pharmaceutical drug is not that simple as it was in the past. This process has been evolved up to a huge extent in previous few decades. However, the basic mechanism is still same for all sorts of chemical entities. As described by the various Pharmaceutical experts on Carenician , The step by step procedure of making a pharmaceutical drug is given as;

Obtaining Active Material From A Source

Initially, an active drug is to be extracted from its source. Active drug means the portion of a pharmaceutical that is responsible for its pharmacological activity. Plants, animals, microorganisms and minerals are the possible sources of drugs, among which each source offers a unique way of extraction of drugs present in it.

Refining And Advancement Of Active Material

After extraction, the active material is made free of associated impurities with the help of a variety of techniques depending upon the source and the chemical nature of drug as well as the nature of impurities. Now, this purified active material is transformed into a transportable and utilizable form such as a powder, crystals, solutions or any other form as suitable for the stability of the active material followed by its packaging in a best suitable way. In this stat, the active drug is sometimes also called as raw materials. These all steps are carried out usually in the chemical industries that manufacture various kinds of chemicals and raw materials of pharmaceutical drugs.

Transportation Of Raw Materials To The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plants

Now this refined and purified active drug material is transported to pharmaceutical plants via a suitable carriage. Care is taken in all these steps to maintain the stability and prevent the alteration in chemical nature of the drug material.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

In Pharmaceutical plants, various other supportive chemicals are incorporated into this raw material in a specified manner. These supportive chemicals are called as additives. These chemicals are added to the active drug in order to facilitate the stability, palatability, storage, transportation and ingestion of the final pharmaceutical drug, often called as final dosage form. The nature of final dosage form depends on the chemical nature, utility of the drug and the target users of this drug. A single active drug may be presented in more than one kind of dosage forms at the same time. The examples of dosage forms may include tablets, capsules, syrup, suspensions, powders etc. After conducting various quality control tests, the credibility of the manufactured pharmaceuticals drug is analyzed before sending it to the packaging section of pharmaceuticals plant.

Packaging

The final pharmaceutical dosage form is packed with a material that suits its characteristics at the best level. Usually, the photosensitive drugs are packed in amber colored bottles. Similarly, blister or alu-alu packing is used for tablets.
